Slayer

Close the gap. Break them. Leave nothing standing.

Slayer

The Slayer is a base melee class in Grim Dawn, the dark-fantasy action RPG developed by Crate Entertainment. Built around aggressive, high-burst close-quarters combat, the Slayer closes distance with relentless speed and punishes enemies with heavy sword, axe, or mace strikes. Where other classes keep their distance or rely on spellcraft, the Slayer thrives in the chaos of the front line, trading a degree of survivability for raw offensive pressure.

Each Slayer can specialize further through one of two Ascendancies—Bloodreaver or Executioner—reshaping the class's identity around sustained lifesteal aggression or devastating execution-style finishing blows. The class anchors the game's most straightforward 'get in and hit hard' fantasy while still offering meaningful build diversity through weapon choice, shield usage, and skill synergies.

Lore & Background

In the scarred lands of Kaineng, the Abyssal incursion has turned once-peaceful territories into killing grounds. The Slayers emerged not as knights in shining armor but as hardened hunters—warriors who saw the Abyssal tide not as a war to be won by banners and battalions, but as a cull to be completed one corpse at a time. They carry no heraldry, swear no oaths to distant lords. Their creed is simple: find the enemy, end it, move on.

Where the Warden holds the line and the Occultist bends reality, the Slayer embodies the most primal answer to the darkness. Their training emphasizes the first three seconds of a fight—the rush, the opening strike, the follow-up that leaves no room for recovery. In the taverns of Kaineng, a Slayer is recognized by the notches on their blade and the dried blood that never quite washes clean from the grip.

The two paths a Slayer may walk after proving themselves—Bloodreaver and Executioner—reflect the two philosophies of the hunt. One drinks from the wound to sustain the chase. The other waits for the perfect moment to deliver a single, irreversible blow. Both are lethal. Both are patient in their own violent way.

In Their Own Story

The corridor of the Hollow Keep stank of rust and old blood. Kaelen did not slow. The Abyssal thing lunged from the dark, mandibles splitting the air where her head had been a heartbeat ago. She was already inside its guard, axe biting through chitin, the impact jarring up through her forearms and into her teeth. It shrieked. She did not. The second swing was slower, deliberate, the blade finding the joint where the neck met the thorax. It dropped. She wiped the axe on its carapace, spat, and kept walking. Behind her, the keep groaned with more of them. She smiled. Good. More work meant more blood, and blood meant she would not be hungry by morning.

Reader's Guide

The Slayer is the class for players who want the fight to be over before it really starts. Thematically, they are the hunter who does not wait for the prey to come to them—they cross the field, close the distance, and end the encounter in a flurry of steel. At a glance, the kit reads as aggressive and direct: rushing attacks, heavy swings, shield bashes that shove enemies into walls. There is little subtlety here. The fantasy is momentum and impact.

What separates the Slayer from the Warden, the other melee base class, is the commitment to offense. Where the Warden can turtle behind a shield and let the fight come to them, the Slayer creates the fight. Skill choices reward closing gaps, chaining hits, and punishing enemies who are already staggered or bleeding. Weapon flexibility is a hallmark: a one-handed sword with a shield gives a slightly more controlled, defensive rhythm, while a two-handed axe or mace leans into the pure bruiser archetype.

The Ascendancy choice reshapes the identity. Bloodreaver turns the Slayer into a sustained predator—lifesteal and bleed effects mean the longer the fight, the stronger the Slayer becomes, rewarding players who stay in the melee and let the enemy run out of health first. Executioner pivots toward burst and finishing: skills scale with enemy health thresholds, making the Slayer a surgical killer who waits for the right moment to deliver an overkill blow. Both paths keep the core fantasy intact but sharpen the edge in different directions.

Build archetypes the Slayer anchors: the two-handed axe bruiser for maximum single-hit impact, the sword-and-shield basher for a more mobile, interrupt-heavy playstyle, and the Bloodreaver lifesteal sustain build for players who want to ignore their own health bar entirely.
