Pyromancer
Turn the battlefield into a furnace and let the flames do the talking.
The Pyromancer is one of the starting classes in Grim Dawn, an action RPG set in the dark-fantasy world of Kashwa. As a ranged arcane specialist, the Pyromancer wields a staff and channels raw elemental fire into devastating spells, serving as the party's primary burst-damage caster and area-denial mage.
Unlike the melee-focused Warbringer or the bow-wielding Warden, the Pyromancer fights from a distance, weaving together fireballs, flame waves, and scorching auras to melt through hordes of Abyss-spawned horrors. Its Ascendancy elevates the class from a competent fire mage into a walking conflagration, reshaping how the player approaches positioning, resource management, and burst windows.

Lore & Background
In the shattered world of Kashwa, the Abyss seeps through the Rift, corrupting land and people alike. The Pyromancer draws on the ancient arcane traditions that predate the corruption, channeling the same elemental fire that once forged the world's foundations. Where the Abyss breeds cold, void, and decay, the Pyromancer answers with searing, purifying flame—a counterforce as old as the world itself.
Practitioners of the Pyromancer's arts are few. The discipline demands a mind steady enough to hold a wall of fire without being consumed by it, and a will strong enough to sustain the arcane cost of each casting. In the border towns and war-camps that dot the Rift's edge, a Pyromancer is both a weapon and a beacon: the orange glow of their spells cutting through the perpetual gloom that the Abyss drapes over the land.
The class's Ascendancy represents the final shedding of restraint. Rather than merely hurling fire, the Pyromancer becomes the fire—an uncontrolled, radiating conflagration that leaves nothing behind but ash and the faint, lingering warmth of what was once a living world.
In Their Own Story
The corridor was lined with the chitin-shells of Rift-spawned horrors, their carapaces still faintly warm. Sera pressed her staff's crystal tip between her palms and felt the familiar hum build in her molars, in the base of her skull. Ahead, a wall of Abyss-touched soldiers pressed against the barricade, their eyes void-black, their breath a thin grey mist that should not have been possible in the heat of the summer camp.
She didn't shout a warning. She didn't need to. The fire simply *was*—a rolling, roaring sheet of orange and white that peeled back the mist, turned the chitin to glass, and left the soldiers as nothing more than smouldering silhouettes against the stone. The smell of ozone and burnt bone hung in the air. Someone behind her was already reloading a crossbow, muttering a prayer to a god Sera had never met.
Sera exhaled. The crystal dimmed. The corridor was quiet again, except for the soft tick of cooling glass.
Reader's Guide
The Pyromancer is the class for players who want to feel like a natural disaster in human form. Thematically, you are not a warrior who learned a few fire spells; you are the fire, given a mind and a purpose. Your kit reads as a toolkit of escalation: small, reliable nukes that scale into screen-clearing conflagrations, all anchored by a staff that feels like an extension of your own nervous system.
At a glance, what sets the Pyromancer apart is the *rhythm* of the kit. You are not trading hits; you are building heat. A flame wave clears the immediate space, a fireball punches through a tank, a scorching aura keeps the pressure on while you reposition. The Ascendancy then reframes the entire identity: you stop being a caster who throws fire and become a walking inferno, your presence itself the threat. The build archetypes that anchor the class tend to fall into two camps—burst-and-reposition (maximise the Ascendancy window, then reposition) and sustained-burn (stacking fire damage over time with auras and persistent spells).
If the Warbringer is a hammer and the Warden is a needle, the Pyromancer is the campfire that slowly, inexorably turns the forest to ash. Play it with patience, and the world around you simply stops existing.
Did You Know?
- The Pyromancer is one of the original starting classes available from the very first character creation screen in Grim Dawn, alongside the Warbringer, Warden, Occultist, and Trickster.
- Grim Dawn's fire-magic design philosophy emphasises area denial and burst windows over sustained single-target DPS, making the Pyromancer feel distinct from generic 'fire mage' archetypes in other ARPGs.
- The game's world of Kashwa is defined by the Abyss, a creeping dark force that corrupts land and people; the Pyromancer's fire is thematically positioned as an ancient counterforce to that corruption.
- Grim Dawn received major expansions—including Tyrant's Reign and Ashes of Malmouth—that added new content, skills, and progression depth affecting all classes, including the Pyromancer.
