Berserker
Channel your fury into a storm of steel and blood.
The Berserker is a starting class in Grim Dawn, the action RPG set in the dark-fantasy world of Khymeria. Built around channeling raw, uncontrolled fury into devastating melee attacks, the Berserker trades defensive caution for overwhelming offensive power. The class draws on a secondary resource called Rage, which fuels increasingly aggressive skills and buffs, making it a front-line damage dealer that thrives in sustained close-quarters combat.
As an Ascendancy, the Berserker deepens this identity: the warrior becomes less a disciplined soldier and more a force of nature, scaling damage through health and relentless aggression. The class anchors builds that prioritize raw single-target and area damage, health-based survivability, and the visceral, high-risk high-reward feel of fighting with everything you have.

Lore & Background
In Khymeria, the Berserker represents the warrior who has crossed the threshold between disciplined combat and primal, consuming rage. These fighters are not the polished knights of the capital cities but the scarred veterans of frontier wars, mercenary companies, and desperate last stands. Their power comes not from arcane study or divine blessing but from the sheer, terrifying force of a human will refusing to yield. In a world poisoned by the corruption of the Dark and the lingering influence of the old gods, that refusal is both a shield against despair and a slow poison.
The Berserker's path is one of self-destruction as a weapon. Each swing of the axe, each bellowed charge, costs something — a piece of composure, a sliver of life force. The class embodies the grim truth of Khymerian survival: that the only thing worse than bleeding is standing still while the world bleeds around you. Their rage is not madness but a chosen discipline, a refusal to let the darkness claim the last spark of defiance within them.
Among the other classes of Grim Dawn, the Berserker occupies a singular niche. Where the Warden calls on the land's old magic and the Occultist bargains with forbidden knowledge, the Berserker simply hits harder, faster, and with less regard for their own survival. It is the oldest and most brutal answer to a world that has turned against you.
In Their Own Story
The mud of the Khymerian front had turned to black slurry under weeks of rain, and the line of soldiers ahead of her was breaking. She did not think. Thinking was for the men still standing in formation, reciting their oaths. She thought of the village behind them, the ones she had promised to bring back. The promise had already failed. What remained was the axe in her hands and the heat rising in her chest like a second heartbeat.
She stepped forward into the gap. The first blow split a helmet and the skull beneath it. The second caught a spear shaft and she wrenched it free. Rage was not a word she used; it was the only language her body still spoke. Around her the battle churned — steel on steel, the wet sound of things being torn — but she heard none of it. There was only the next swing, the next breath, the next inch of ground she would take with her own two hands. When it was over, she would be bleeding from a dozen wounds she could not feel. She would stand. She would always stand. That was the deal she had made with the dark, and she had not yet found a way to break it.
Reader's Guide
The Berserker is the class for players who want combat to feel like a physical collision. At its core, the kit is built around a simple, visceral loop: generate Rage through aggressive actions, spend it on buffs and finishers that multiply your damage, and keep swinging. Skills like Whirlwind, Cleave, and Skullcrusher give you a mix of area pressure and single-target burst, while buffs such as Bloodlust and Reckless Abandon reward you for staying in the thick of the fight. You are not hiding, kiting, or weaving; you are the thing the enemies are trying to avoid, and you are not avoiding them.
The Ascendancy sharpens this identity into something almost elemental. Health becomes a scaling stat that feeds back into your damage, making the Berserker a paradox: the more you take, the harder you hit. The kit leans further into sustained aggression, with skills that reward you for never leaving melee range and for keeping your Rage bar full. The feel shifts from "a warrior who gets angry" to "a force of nature that happens to hold an axe."
Build archetypes the class anchors include the two-handed cleaver (maximum single-target damage, minimal defense), the shield-and-axe tank (survivability through health scaling and shield skills), and the whirlwind shaman (area control and sustained pressure). All of them share one soul: you are the problem the enemy cannot solve by standing still.
