Occultist
Spend your blood, summon the Void, and let the dark pay the debt.
The Occultist is a base class in Grim Dawn, the isometric action RPG set in the dark-fantasy world of Kainland. A scholar of forbidden pacts and parasitic magic, the Occultist channels the raw, hungry energies of the Void and dark blood to fuel devastating offensive and utility abilities. Where other classes command elemental forces or wield holy light, the Occultist reaches into the spaces between things — spending their own vitality, blood, and a fragment of their soul to pull power from the unseen.
The class is defined by a give-and-take economy: every major ability draws on the character's own health or a pool of dark resources, rewarding a rhythm of expenditure and regeneration. The two available ascendancies, Bloodmage and Voidwalker, push the Occultist toward either a visceral lifesteal-and-blood-pool identity or a more alien, untethered void-phase identity, fundamentally reshaping how the character fights and feels on the battlefield.

Lore & Background
In the scarred lands of Kainland, where the corruption of the Void seeps through every ruin and overgrown temple, a small number of scholars have learned to listen to the silence between heartbeats. These are the Occultists — not priests, not warriors, but students of a knowledge that costs them something with every page turned. They have read the texts that others burned, traced the sigils that others fled, and made pacts that leave a permanent ache behind the eyes.
Their power is not granted; it is extracted. The Void does not bestow its energy willingly, and blood is not a resource to be spent lightly. An Occultist who channels a dark ritual feels the cold pull in their marrow, the thinning of the self, the momentary certainty that the thing on the other side of the veil is watching them back. And yet they do it again, because the alternative is to be powerless in a world that has grown teeth.
The two paths an Occultist may walk after proving their worth split along a philosophical line. The Bloodmage embraces the wound as a tool, treating their own flesh as fuel and their enemies' blood as currency. The Voidwalker, by contrast, begins to forget which side of the membrane is real, trading solidity for phase, presence for absence, until the scholar's face is the last thing the world remembers of them.
In Their Own Story
The cathedral had no roof anymore. Rain fell through the broken vault and pooled in the mosaic of a saint whose name no one in Kainland remembered. Kael stood in the center of the nave, knees bent, palms pressed flat against the wet stone. The sigil beneath her fingers was older than the building, older than the language that named it. She could feel it breathing — a slow, tidal pull that matched no heartbeat she had ever known.
She opened her mouth and let the word out. It was not a word in any tongue she had studied. It was a shape her throat made when the Void leaned close enough to whisper. The air above the pool of rain turned the color of a bruise. Something in the dark between the pillars shifted, unmade, and reformed into a shape that was almost a hand.
Kael closed her eyes. Felt the thinning. Felt the cost settle into her ribs like a second skeleton.
"Enough," she said, to the thing, to herself, to the rain. The hand dissolved. The bruise faded. She stood, wiped the blood from her knuckles onto her sleeve, and walked out into the grey. The cathedral behind her was quiet again, but the mosaic saint's eyes, she was sure, had changed direction. They were looking at her now.
Reader's Guide
The Occultist is the scholar of forbidden pacts — a character who trades their own vitality and sanity for access to the raw, hungry energies of the Void. Where the Pyromancer commands fire and the Warden wields the light of the Hierophant, the Occultist reaches into the spaces between things, pulling void energy and dark blood into service. Their kit feels distinct at a glance: skills that drain, that pool, that summon, that channel. There is a visceral, almost parasitic quality to the way an Occultist fights — they are always giving something, a hit point, a drop of blood, a piece of their focus, to gain power.
The two ascendancies split the class's identity along a clear philosophical line. The Bloodmage leans fully into the parasitic, lifestealing, blood-pooling side: you become a walking wound, trading flesh for force, leaving crimson trails that empower your next strike. The Voidwalker, by contrast, becomes something more alien and untethered — teleporting, phasing, dealing damage from the spaces between reality. One is a butcher in a scholar's coat; the other is a ghost wearing a scholar's face.
Build archetypes anchor around a few core identities: the sustained channeler who keeps a dark ritual going indefinitely, the burst-caster who empties a void blast and repositions, the summoner who populates the battlefield with dark entities, and the lifesteal engine that never truly dies because every hit feeds back. The class rewards players who enjoy a rhythm of give-and-take, of spending and regaining, of feeling the cost of power in their character's very body.
