Skill Points

Every point you spend permanently carves the shape of your build.

Skill Points

Skill Points are the core progression currency in Grim Dawn, the isometric action RPG developed by Crate Entertainment and released in 2016. Earned as your character levels up in the war-torn world of Kaitain, each point is spent to unlock new abilities or raise the rank of existing ones across the game's skill trees. They represent the single most consequential resource in long-term character building, because every allocation shapes how your character fights, survives, and scales into the late game.

Unlike simpler ARPGs where a single tree governs all growth, Grim Dawn splits its abilities into Melee, Ranged, and Magic categories, each populated with class-specific and shared skills. Choosing where to invest your limited points defines whether you become a frontline bruiser, a precision archer, a spellcaster, or a hybrid—and those choices carry weight across every future encounter.

Lore & Background

In the shattered lands of Kaitain, a warrior's power is not granted by a single divine blessing but accumulated through years of brutal, repetitive practice. The skill trees that structure a character's growth mirror this: a blade must be swung ten thousand times before it cuts cleanly, a bolt must be loosed through fog and rain until the hand steadies, a cantrip must be chanted until the words no longer feel foreign. Each rank you invest in a skill is that thousandth repetition made permanent.

The four classes—Warrior, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warden—each carry a different tradition of training. A Warrior's lineage emphasizes raw force and endurance in melee engagements; a Rogue's is built on speed, precision, and the quiet art of the ranged strike. The Sorcerer draws on the unstable magical currents that still bleed through Kaitain's broken ley-lines, while the Warden walks the narrow path between the physical and the arcane. Yet all four share the same underlying truth: talent without repetition is nothing, and the skill point is the measure of that repetition made manifest.

Veterans of Kaitain's endless campaigns speak of the moment a new skill unlocks not as a game notification but as a muscle finally remembering a movement it had always half-known. The system rewards patience and deliberate planning over the frantic button-mashing of early levels, and those who respect that rhythm emerge far stronger than those who spend points impulsively and regret the shape of their build by Act Two.

In Their Own Story

The lantern in the Waystation flickered, casting long shadows across the scarred table. Kael set down her chipped mug and stared at the parchment spread before her—the old hunting guide, the one that listed every trick a blade could do. She had forty-three points left. Forty-three small decisions that would echo through every dungeon, every horde, every boss she still had to face.

Beside her, the Warden's apprentice tapped his fingers against the wood, impatient. "Just put it in the whirlwind," he said. "Everyone does."

Kael almost smiled. She thought of the three points she'd sunk into a single, unglamorous shield-bash back in the Ashlands, the one that had saved her life when the horde broke through the chokepoint and her guard was the only thing between the blade and her throat. She thought of the two points in a backstep she'd used so often it felt like breathing.

She reached for the quill. The apprentice watched. The lantern guttered once, twice, and the shadows held still, waiting for her to choose who she would be for the next hundred fights.

Reader's Guide

Skill Points are the currency you spend to unlock and upgrade abilities in Grim Dawn's skill trees. You earn one per level, and you allocate them in the Skills menu (default key: K). Each skill has multiple ranks; spending additional points raises its damage, duration, or effect. Skills are grouped into Melee, Ranged, and Magic trees, and your class determines which specific skills appear in each.

How it interlocks: Your chosen class sets the baseline skills you see, but all four classes can invest in all three categories. Attribute points (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Vitality) scale the damage and survivability of those skills, so a point in a skill and a point in an attribute work together. Gear affixes that boost specific skill categories or reduce cooldowns also multiply the value of your allocations.

Gotchas that trip new players: First, skill-point spending is a long-term commitment—once a point is in a skill, reshaping your build means a full reset, which costs gold and can be expensive at high levels. Second, prerequisite skills must be unlocked before you can invest in the skills that branch off them, so a tree that looks open may actually require a specific order. Plan your build around the endgame content you intend to face, not just the early acts, because the skills that feel strong at level 10 may be irrelevant at level 50.
