Gold
The only coin that matters in Kaitain—spend it wisely or watch your build stall.
Gold is the sole currency of Grim Dawn, the dark-fantasy action RPG set in the land of Kaitain. Every economic interaction in the game—purchasing gear from merchants, buying skill books to unlock new abilities, paying for repairs, crafting at workbenches, and acquiring potions or consumables—runs on gold. It is the universal medium through which the player funds their character's progression and equipment upkeep.
Gold is earned primarily by defeating enemies, completing quests, and selling surplus loot to vendors. Because the game has no secondary currency, no auction house, and no player-to-player trading in the base experience, gold functions as a straightforward single-track economy: you accumulate it, spend it on the systems that gate your build, and farm more when you run dry.

Lore & Background
In the shattered world of Kaitain, gold is more than a trade token; it is the residue of a civilization that once thrived before the cataclysm that scarred the land. The coins and ingots you pry from the chests of fallen foes and the hoards of bandit camps carry the weight of that lost era—minted by hands that no longer exist, stamped with crests of houses now reduced to ash.
Merchants in the port city and the scattered settlements do not merely buy and sell; they are the last threads connecting the living to the old economy. A blacksmith who charges you for a re-forged blade, a scholar who prices a skill tome at a fortune, a potion-maker who weighs each vial on a brass scale—each transaction is a small act of continuity in a world that has largely forgotten how to function.
For the wanderer who walks the roads of Kaitain, gold is survival. Without it, your armor stays dented, your skill tree stays locked, and the next ambush in the marsh finds you one broken rib away from death. The currency does not judge, but it does not forgive either.
In Their Own Story
The torch guttered in the salt wind. Sera set the dented breastplate on the merchant's counter and watched his fingers trace the crack along the rivet line. He shook his head, then nodded—reparable, but not cheap. She counted the coins from her pouch, the clink sharp against the silence of the shop. Outside, the fog was swallowing the harbor again, and somewhere out in it, something with too many teeth was still circling. She pressed the last three coins into his palm and took the repaired plate, feeling the cold metal settle against her ribs like a promise. Enough. For now, it was enough.
Reader's Guide
Gold is Grim Dawn's single currency. You earn it by killing enemies, turning in quests, and selling items you no longer need to any vendor. You spend it on the things that actually gate your progression: skill books (required to unlock new skills), gear purchases from merchants, crafting at workbenches, repairing damaged equipment, and buying potions or consumables.
The system interlocks tightly with difficulty. Higher difficulty levels increase gold rewards from enemies and bosses, so your income naturally scales as you push into harder content. Crafting and repairs also cost more as your gear tier rises, meaning endgame gold demands are significantly higher than early-game ones. The bank in each settlement lets you stash excess gold so it doesn't clutter your inventory.
Two common gotchas trip up new players. First: skill books are a one-time gold sink per skill, and you cannot re-buy a book you already own, so budget for the full tree early if you know your build direction. Second: selling a piece of gear to a vendor is permanent—there is no buy-back window—so double-check before you dump a rare item you might want to reforge or compare later.
Did You Know?
- Gold is the only currency in Grim Dawn's base game; there is no secondary token, no player-to-player trading, and no auction house.
- Skill books, which unlock new skills for your character, must be purchased with gold from vendors, making gold a hard prerequisite for build expansion.
- Gold rewards from enemies and bosses scale with the selected difficulty level, so farming on higher difficulties is the primary way to accelerate your gold income.
- The bank available in settlements lets you deposit and withdraw gold, keeping your inventory slots free for gear and consumables.
