The campfire had burned down to embers when you pulled the blade from its wrapping. The steel was cold—not the cold of winter, but the flat, dead cold of a thing that has been buried for a very long time. Ash clung to the fuller in a fine grey dust that puffed away when you turned the edge over in your palm. No maker's mark. No sigil. Just the faintest whisper of a rune you almost recognized, half-eroded by use. Outside the tent, the wind off the marshes carried the smell of smoke and something older. You sheathed it without ceremony. It had already chosen its next war.
